Gerard fell silent. Both of them fell silent, with one focusing on staying relaxed while the other kept an eye on the road.
Dominic was the only one attending the lunch meeting today, so Gerard was just acting as the driver. He invited Vespera along after noticing Nancy bothering her as they were leaving, so he decided to bring her too.
The car pulled up to a courtyard with a Jitanese design. From the outside, you could faintly glimpse the dry landscape garden within.
"You two find a spot to wait," Dominic instructed as he exited the vehicle. Vespera and Gerard each acknowledged their words.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtUpon entering, Dominic was politely escorted by a middle-aged man who welcomed him, while Vespera and Gerard were led by another woman in a professional suit to a different area.
In the large tatami room, Vespera and Gerard took their seats. After a short wait, an extravagant meal was presented to them.
Once the woman smiled and stepped away, Vespera spoke quietly, "There's no dinner appointment listed for today. That means someone must have set it up directly with Mr. Reid. Do you know who it is?" "No idea," Gerard replied, shaking his head.
"Why is it that you're always in the dark?" "You could ask about it later." "I don't ask questions that aren't my business." Vespera wouldn't receive any special treatment at work due to her personal ties. Despite her past marriage to Luke, she had managed company matters strictly based on professional guidelines. Blurring that line would have led to chaos.
Therefore, Dominic's message to her had been clear. He would share information she was allowed to know, and if he didn't bring it up, it meant it was off-limits, and she wouldn't probe further.
Gerard let out a few chuckles, having a bit of insight into why Vespera was always well-liked. She possessed qualities that put people at ease. She wasn't pretentious or fake, and she knew how to maintain a balanced demeanor without being irritating.
"While I don't know who the individual is, I do know Mr. Reid is in touch with a chamber of commerce." "A chamber of commerce?" "Yes. I'm not sure exactly which one yet. I just overheard him talking on the phone in the car. He should inform us about it later." "Hmm..." Vespera nodded, lost in thought.
Dominic had always been enigmatic in his actions. Just the day before, he had unexpectedly allocated the project funds for the Vortex initiative, and now he was communicating with a chamber of commerce. What was he up to? Their meal had stretched on for an hour and when they emerged, only Dominic was still there.
When Vespera and Gerard noticed him exiting, they hurried to catch up with him. Both were so stuffed that after a few steps, one would let out a burp, followed by the other, and occasionally they even burped in unison.
Dominic paused, turned to face them, and with a frown said, "If I hadn't known it was you two back there, I might have thought I was being trailed by a pair of cows." Vespera and Gerard felt a bit awkward. They found themselves with nothing to do as they sat there.
If they hadn't indulged in a hearty meal, what else could they have done? Alone, they would have felt restricted. But together, they felt liberated. Besides, the food was exceptionally tasty, which led them to unintentionally overeat.
Dominic turned and kept walking outside.
Once they were outside, he told Gerard, "You take a taxi and head back first. I have somewhere else to go."
Gerard handed him the car keys and replied, "Alright, I'll leave now." Vespera watched atched Gerard hurrying away and raised her hand, wanting to say, "Gerard, slow down. Walking too fast after eating might give you acute appendicitis!"
Dominic noticed she was still looking in Gerard's direction and gently m patted the back of her head. "Are you theb thinking about becoming sworn besties with Gerard?" Vespera was speechless. "It's tough to catch a taxi here. Why are you giving Gerard a hard time?" After all, he was her ally! Dominic replied, "I haven't eaten a thing." His voice was rather cold and somber.
Vespera suppressed a laugh and suggested, "How about we find a place, and I'll join you for a meal?"
Dominic led her into the car. Once the car door was locked, hegazed at her with a particulars sparkle in his eyes.
"Will you joinno matter what I choose to eat?" Blushing, Vespera paused while fastening her seat belt as she said, "You can't eat people during the day."
