After cleaning the kitchen and dining room, she switched off the lights. Her eyes instinctively flickered toward the downstairs

bedroom door before she turned and headed upstairs.

Lying in bed, the exhaustion of the day washed over her, but sleep wouldn'te. She tossed and turned for an hour before giving

up and going out onto the balcony to look at the stars.

The stars in the mountains were usually brilliant, clear enough to pierce through the soul and offer hope. But tonight, the sky was a

hazy gray, and even the moon was just a pale, yellowish blur.

She remembered then: the weather was turning.

She hoped the rain would hold off until after she had left the mountains.

As her mind wandered, her gaze drifted downward, and she saw that the light in Gabriel's room was still on. He was awake, too.

If she just leaned out a little, she might be able to see what he was doing.

She resisted the urge and forced herself to look back up at the sky, searching for a stray star in the gaps between the clouds.

When her neck ached from looking up, she glanced toward the other villas and stretched. Her eyes landed on something, and she

raised her eyebrows in surprise.
