Aubrey shook her head. “Right now, Alpha Henry will do anything I ask. And yes, he is... special to
me. But no matter how good things are, | still want to give myself a way out.”
Alpha Mateo looked slightly puzzled, but her last sentence clarified everything. “So, helping-
this is your backup plan?”
He couldn’t help but laugh. He knew Alpha Henry well. That man loved fiercely and held on tight-
once he gave his heart, he’d never let go. In Mateo’s eyes, Aubrey was worrying over nothing.
But Aubrey nodded solemnly. “If things go wrong, I'd rather have you to fall back on. If they don’t,
then | don’t mind you profiting from it. The Shadowmoon Pack is already strong enough. Killing
Ulrich will only ignite more conflict across the continent. But for the Zach family? This is a golden
opportunity. It won’t save you from ruin, but it’ll be exactly the push you need at exactly the right
time.”
Alpha Mateo narrowed his eyes. His long, upturned lashes gave his gaze a seductive, almost wicked
charm.
“Well, since you’re being so generous, I'll take the offer. But... can | ask you something?”

He exhaled a curl of smoke, his face hidden behind the haze.
“You said Alpha Henry is different for you. What makes him different?”
If it wasn’t about wealth, looks, or age-Mateo truly couldn't see what made Henry stand out. He needed to hear
it. Even if he lost, he wanted to know why.
Aubrey paused, then said softly, “I guess it’s because... he was the first person | ever liked.”
And the last.
“I've liked him for over ten years,” she added.
In truth... it had been more than twenty.
“Loving someone becomes a habit. | used up all my courage on him. After that, | don’t think | have the heart or
strength left to give anyone else.”
She watched Mateo’s playful smile slowly fade. Then she smiled instead. “You didn’t used to

“Me?” Alpha Mateo glanced at the cigarette in his fingers and let out a bitter laugh. “Probably started because of
someone who's been givinga headache...”
Aubrey didn’t dwell on it. The only thing that mattered to her was whether her plan would succeed.
She'd promised herself she’d live without fear or hesitation in this life. Fear and weakness were already carved
out of her. Maybe she was even a little unwell-ssaid people with psychological issues lacked empathy,
lacked fear. Lately, she found herself less and less affected by others’ pain, less and less concerned about
consequences. But so what?
It wasn’t like she planned to hurt innocent people.
She laid out her straightforward, brutal plan to Mateo. When she was done, his eyes went wide. The
cigarette in his hand burned down to his fingers before he snapped back to reality.
“You're serious?!”
He never imagined she’d trust him enough to share something like this. The things Ulrich had left
behind-just thinking about them hinted at staggering wealth. And she was handing it to him on a
silver platter...
“If you're going to use someone, then use them. But once you use them, trust them. You’ll get what
you deserve, and so will I. What? Are you tempted by what’s down there?”
“No,” Alpha Mateo said quickly, shaking his head. “I'd never touch what’s yours. I’m just surprised
you trustthis much.”
He took a deep breath, then said with conviction, “If what you’ve toldis all true, then I'm in. |
brought thirty beta warriors with me. That should be enough!”
Aubrey raised her brow, a cold smile tugging at her lips.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the look on Ulrich’s face.”
