Chapter 810 Phipps didn't give it a second thought. Citrine was a businesswoman, and business was all about profit; as long as the price was right, she'd agree to anything.
But he was proven wrong almost immediately.
Citrine didn't respond. She met Phipps' gaze head-on. "Mr. Jeff, I've heard about the unusual relationship you have with Sebastian. You may be his butler, but you're also one of the few people he actually trusts. Is it true? Do you really want to destroy his second personality?" Phipps's pupils contracted slightly, a flicker of hesitation passing through his eyes. But he steeled himself almost instantly.
His voice was firm, conviction already settled in his heart. "I've watched Seb grow up since he was a child. I have to do this-for his sake." "Ms. Carmichael, nyour terms." Citrine's eyes were unreadable; Phipps couldn't tell what she was thinking.
He waited in silence, the seconds stretching out, until at last she spoke.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt"Mr. Jeff, do you really think Sebastian's true self is happy?" In the past, Sebastian had been almost irrelevant to her. But after all the tthey'd spent together, a bond of trust had formed between them. She couldn't bring herself to do anything that might hurt him.
And now, she realized, she had her own reasons-a selfish impulse she couldn't ignore. Why did it have to be the second personality that needed to die? Why not the original? If it were up to her, she'd keep the second one.
Phipps considered it seriously. The truth was, Sebastian hadn't been happy for years. He'd grown darker, more withdrawn, even a little unstable.
As he mulled over Citrine's words, he suddenly realized there was a hidden meaning behind them. He looked up at her.
"What are you getting at?" Citrine spoke slowly. "As far as I know, his primary personality may be successful, but he's violent, disturbed, cold, and incapable of real empathy. Someone like that can't possibly be happy-he probably can't even stand himself." Phipps stared at Citrine, momentarily at a loss for words. She was right- Sebastian did despise himself.
After a long silence, Citrine's voice cut through the air, icy and clear. "If that's the case, wouldn't it be better to destroy his original personality?" Phipps's eyes went wide, his expression shifting rapidly. "No. Absolutely not." Citrine arched an eyebrow, unfazed by his resistance. Apparently, he wasn't as easy to persuade as she'd hoped. She tried again. "Don't you want Sebastian to be mentally healthy? His second personality is the healthier one." Phipps didn't hesitate. "No." He pressed on, "That's not the real Sebastian." He looked at Citrine, his expression earnest. "Ms. Carmichael, whatever your price, I'm willing to pay it. Just help me." "I'm sorry. I can't do that." Seeing he wouldn't budge, Citrine didn't waste any more time. Her refusal was direct and final.
Then she added, "And as for keeping this from Sebastian like I promised, I can't do that either. The money you mentioned-I'll have my assistant wire it to you by the end of the day." Phipps's frown deepened. Nothing was going the way he'd expected.
Not only had she refused to operate on Sebastian, she was backing out of their prior agreement as well.
Du: He didn't even want to imagine what might happen if Sebastian's two- personalities learned about each othe Would they try to destroy one another?
What's more, Sebastian's physician had warned him: if Sebastian underwent severe psychological m stress, the second personality might overwhelm the original and becdominant. The thought made Phipps's worry lines deepen.
Seeing how resolute Citrine looked, he couldn't help but ask)"Canlask why you changed your mind?" She had agreed so readily before.
He just couldn't understand it.
And truthfully, neither could Citrine herself.
She never would have believed that, in this life or the last, there would ca day when she'd go back on her word.
Under Phipps's steady gaze, Citrine hesitated for a moment, thenom answered honestly, "Because he's different tonow." He wasn't just a suitor anymore.
They were friends. They trusted each other.
If she agreed to Phipps's request, it would feel like betraying Sebastian.
But most of all-she simply didn't want to.
