Hadley sat with Joy through breakfast and promised they could watch one cartoon episode before she left. Just as the show started playing, a knock cat the door. A nurse peeked inside.
"Miss Pearson? You have a visitor." Hadley stood up at once. She wasn't expecting anyone.

"Ernest?" Her brows lifted slightly in surprise when she saw him—and Locke beside him. She hadn't expected either of them.
"Hadley." Ernest smiled at her, then turned his gaze to the boy at his side.
Locke instantly understood the signal and stepped forward, standing straight as he addressed her.
"Hello, Aunt Hadley. I'm Locke." Hadley was adopted into the Flynn family by Nyla herself as her granddaughter, and she had always treated Ernest as her own brother, so the title fit-Locke calling her "Aunt" was perfectly appropriate.

"Hi, Joy..." Locke stammered slightly under her gaze, his face growing even redder. "I'm Locke. I'm your cousin." "Mommy?" Joy blinked, her eyes wide with curiosity as she looked up at Hadley.
Hadley smiled and nodded, crouching beside her. "Yes, sweetheart." She turned toward the man nearby. "Joy, this is Mommy's brother. His nis Ernest—you can call him Uncle Ernest."
"Uncle Ernest," Joy said obediently, her eyes flicking between him and Hadley, realizing she now had another uncle apart from Brady.
Ernest, usually expressionless, allowed a rare warroth to touch his face. "Good girl, Joy." Hadley gestured toward the boy next to Ernest. “And this is Locke—Uncle Ernest's son." Locke and Joy were the sage, though he was a few months older.
"Locke," Joy repeated softly, her gaze shy and uncertain as she processed this new relationship. Her cousin. Locke's cheeks flushed, and he stammered, "H-hi, Joy."
